2020 ZINFANDEL CALIFORNIA
BOURBON BARREL-AGED
Region #83
The Story
America’s bourbon barrel-aged wine, 1000 Stories is finished in charred barrels that once housed fine Kentucky bourbon. Born from pushing boundaries, 1000 Stories wines are made in batches, much like craft spirits, so that no one is alike. Each hand-selected lot is an expression of originality—a boldly spirited pursuit of doing things differently.
Vineyards
We sourced grapes from premium vineyards throughout California, selecting parcels that are most expressive. Mendocino County is celebrated for Zinfandel, making Mendocino grapes as an essential component to the blend. These vineyards are located on bench land from Redwood Valley south to the Sanel Valley, a distance of 26 miles, and range in age from 9-45 years old.
The Wine
The wine marries Mendocino’s historic old-vine Zinfandel sites with vineyards in Paso Robles, Lodi and Amador County. Zinfandel lends a generous core of ripe fruit, accented by fragrant notes of spice box and sautéed herbs, while Petite Sirah imparts considerable density, minerality and an unmistakable ruby-purple hue. In signature 1000 Stories fashion, this batch was aged in traditional French and American oak, with a portion finished in charred bourbon barrels before the final blend was assembled.
Barrels & Aging
1000 Stories begins its aging like most Zinfandels: in wine barrels. Then, the tradition transitions to innovation. We select a combination of new and used bourbon barrels to complete the aging process. Each batch is crafted individually and is unique in its final profile. Aging in bourbon barrels imparts characteristics of charred vanilla and dried herbs.
